level ii physical comedy w/ anne zander (in person)

REGISTER FOR CLASSES HERE ** Completion of Intro to Physical Comedy with Anne Zander is a required prerequisite **

Now that you’ve learned the foundations, take your physical comedy skills to the next level with Anne Zander! Learn to be an individual clown from within an ensemble and bring maximum joy and laughter to an audience. Drawing on Gaulier-style clowning, Roy Hart vocals and ensemble devising techniques, this class will build on the groundwork of Intro to Physical Comedy and begin to bridge the gap from classroom exercises to live performance. With more rigorous drilling on specificity, truthful audience connection and clown-awareness, Zander will lead you in the creation of individual and ensemble bits that can be brought to an audience. Anne Zander’s supportive teaching style and professional experience will push you to stretch yourself and grow into the funniest version of your clown self!

This is a physical class! We will be getting moving and sweaty at certain points, so wear what feels good to you for movement, and bring water.

Anne Zander is a “completely ridiculous… completely vulnerable” actor, clown and solo-character creator with an MA in devised, physical theater (Theatre Lab) from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. She studied clowning there and beyond with her Gaulier-trained teacher, Peta Lily, and has been taking classes with LA-based clown, Chad Damiani, throughout the pandemic. Her “painfully funny” solo character-clown show JUICEBOX took Portland by storm in 2019 and was Official Selection 2020 at Chicago Sketchfest, Dallas Comedy Festival and HBO’s Women in Comedy Festival (Boston). She’s twice been a guest on Ron Lynch’s IG Live, comedy-variety Tomorrow! Show (LA), and her absurd, digital solo show, Prolific debuted at Fertile Ground 2021. Anne is a long-time mainstage player at Kicksand and has been improvising comedy for over a decade, starting with her longform training at iO Chicago. Her resident Kickstand show, Dear Diary, was frequently named one of Portland Mercury’s ‘Funniest Things to Do.’

This is a 6 week Physical Comedy Class with a class show under the direction of Anne Zander to take place on date, TBD.

WRITING FOR TV: DRAMEDY w/ CHARITY L. MILLER

REGISTER FOR CLASSES HERE ** Open to all experience levels **

Charity_Writing_Workshop_Squarespace (1) (1).jpg

As the lines between television comedy and drama increasingly become blurred to accommodate the evolving tastes of sophisticated audiences, a new television genre: the “dramedy” has emerged. Popular shows such as ATLANTA, INSECURE, FLEABAG, JANE THE VIRGIN, CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND, YOU’RE THE WORST, SHAMELESS, and LOVE are rewriting the stagnant rules of television. Thanks to this new breed of TV and its unique formatting and quirks...dramedy has taken off and set itself apart from its single-genre contemporaries. In this writing course, you will learn the intricacies of this new TV hybrid and work to complete a first draft of an original half-hour pilot. The class will use traditional elements of half-hour comedy (characterization, physicality, limited locations) along with dramatic elements (emotional arcs, serialized storytelling, and dark themes) to craft students’ writing. After brief lessons and lecture, the class will present homework and use a traditional writers’ room approach. They will receive feedback and pitches, take notes, and listen to their work being read aloud by/from others. At the end of 8 weeks, the course will help you craft a novel, hybrid script that is zero parts generic sitcom or cliched dramatic components.

Charity L. Miller is a multiple Emmy-nominated writer/director/producer of crap no one really cares about. Originally from everywhere-the-US-Army-stationed-her-parents, she now calls LA home. She’s improvised in Netflix’s Between Two Ferns the Movie (only one line). Sold shows to Disney (the Mickey Mouse one). And developed original programming for Imagine Entertainment (you know, like Ron Howard and Brian Grazer). She’s a working kids’ and family television writer (Raven’s Home, Family Reunion, Made by Maddie, Bird and Squirrel, etc.). She also gets paid to write for awards shows (with like, celebrities and stuff). Theatre-wise, Charity’s written several critically-lauded sketch reviews (UCB's Jesus Was Ashy, UCB Maude Team: The New Deal, iO West's Period Panties, and Second City Hollywood's THIS IS NOT A TAN!); but also wrote, produced, and/or directed other less-lauded stuff (like UCB's Token, iO West's Jet Jaguar, and 487 Second City Hollywood Premium Shows). In addition to all that other mess, she’s directed Maude Night (UCB’s house sketch teams) and directed and written for Legitimate Goddamn Theatre, and tons of other UCB main-stage shows. Her comedy training (Upright Citizens Brigade, Nerdist School, iO West, Second City Hollywood), master's degree (FSU, KSU), and Shea-buttered Neo-soul leanings (Women's Center for Creative Work) directly clash with her family’s southern roots, advanced knowledge of hashtags, and fixation on baby animals. She’s taught hundreds of workshops (Cartoon Network, Black Women Animate, etc.) and college and university-level writing classes (as a thankless adjunct professor). She's been a finalist/official selection/winner of stand-up competitions (California's Funniest Female), writing contests (like all of them), and short film competitions (SXSW). She was one of the surviving writers in the 2016 CBS Diversity Showcase (back when it was evil). In addition to sleeping, she co-hosts the dope AF stand-up show: Headscarves and Du-rags (HD Comedy) at The Ruby LA every month and performs with UCB improv troupe The Cabal every week.

Learn the fundamentals of physical comedy from master of physical comedy” Anne Zander. Drawing on clowning, vocal exploration, Commedia dell’Arte and more, this class will help you develop deeper body awareness, lean into vulnerability, and build new (literal!) comedy muscles to entertain and amaze. You will learn to make an instant and continuous connection to the audience, discover your own unconscious physicality and learn to build on or shed it as needed. From precision exercises like takes and isolations to physical improvisations to building character from the outside in, you can bring the lessons of this class to your everyday and to your stage performances.

In this 8-week online class we will dive into the basics of sketch from the perspective of UCB-alum and director Rose O’Shea. We will start by taking a look at some of our favorite sketches - please come to the first class with a couple examples from film, TV, theater, even a weirdly good commercial you remember seeing once, to share and discuss. We will identify the key elements needed to create truly memorable sketch comedy, as well as our own unique and specific comedic sensibilities. Following classes will focus on: Observation, Game, Heightening, Surprise/Voice, and Industry (how to go about making a career out of this stuff.) The final two classes will be writing intensives, culminating in a live performance of the incredible, original sketches you will have developed throughout the course. No previous writing or performance experience required, just great taste and great attitude.

Rose O’Shea is a comedian and director originally from Seattle. She is a UCB performer (PONY, Queer World, ASSSSCAT, UCB Touring Company) and UCB improv teacher, as well as a director for Maude Night, UCB’s house sketch teams. She produced the long-running UCB show Legitimate Goddamn Theatre and wrote/directed the play Manic Pixie Congressman. She is the founder of a production company called Lady Astronaut Productions and works as a director for Cut, a Seattle-based channel, as well as The Future Is Zero, a live satirical gameshow. You can catch her on Drunk History (Comedy Central) - something her mom absolutely hated.

Why does it seem like improvisers are able to read each others’ minds? There is an art to communication and agreement that can make improv look like magic, and one of the best ways to develop this skill is to practice identifying the five distinct types of longform scene. Once you know what type of scene you’re in the easier it becomes to play your game with clarity and precision, and invite others to play too. In this week-long workshop we will explore each of the five types of scene (Voice Of Reason/Unusual, Peas In A Pod, Mapping, World, and Pattern/Group Game) and hone the technique of establishing clearly what you want to play, and how.

In some cases, the biggest obstacle in improv is getting out of your head. We tend to overthink our choices when we don't know how a character would react, or if you're trapped about where to take the scene. This workshop avoids getting trapped in your head and encourages you to default to what you would do in an unusual or "crazy" situation. Learn how to be present, stay sharp and be yourself in scenes in this workshop. No one know you more than you, right? So why not use you in your scenes!!

We'll work on initiating a string premise based on your opening and having looser and more fun group games.

Silly vs. Sensible Workshop w/ Will Hines

Lots of scenes have an "unusual" character and a "voice of reason." Knowing how to play each role can make your improv a lot more powerful. Learn to be "wrong" but with a philosophy. Learn to be baffled and confused but not angry. Learning to NOT solve the problem but make it worse.

Will Hines is a teacher, actor, and writer who has performed at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater since November 2000. He currently lives in Los Angeles, where he performs with the improv group The Smokes. He's been on the TV shows "Broad City," "Brooklyn 99" "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend" and "Inside Amy Schumer" and he's also a regular on the podcasts "Comedy Bang Bang" and "Improv4Humans." He also writes sketch comedy, including his award-winning show "A Soundly Defeated Man."

Bring your writer brain into improv. Off of an opening, start a scene with an idea in mind! With a little practice, this will jumpstart your scenes without boxing you in. The trick is still letting your actor brain be in control, also. This approach is great for performing for audiences who haven't seen improv before.

"Concept Album" is an improv form where the ensemble presents three different album options for the audience to vote on. The ensemble then improvises over the music. Through physicality, point of view, and relationship dynamic, the improvisers create a totally improvised show in combination with the tempo of the album's previously recorded tracks.
